Global cancer statistics 2022: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Freddie Bray, Mathieu Laversanne, Hyuna Sung, Jacques Ferlay and 3 more · 2024

This article presents global cancer statistics by world region for the year 2022 based on updated estimates from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). There were close to 20 million new cases of cancer in the year 2022 (including nonmelanoma skin cancers [NMSCs]) alongside 9.7 million deaths from cancer (including NMSC). The estimates suggest that approximately one in five men or women develop cancer in a lifetime, whereas around one in nine men and one in 12 women die from it. Lung cancer was the most frequently diagnosed cancer in 2022, responsible for almost 2.5 million ne…

Cancer statistics, 2023

Rebecca L. Siegel, Kimberly D. Miller, Nikita Sandeep Wagle, Ahmedin Jemal · 2023

Each year, the American Cancer Society estimates the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States and compiles the most recent data on population-based cancer occurrence and outcomes using incidence data collected by central cancer registries and mortality data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics. In 2023, 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States. Cancer incidence increased for prostate cancer by 3% annually from 2014 through 2019 after two decades of decline, translating to an additional 99,000 new cases…

Accurate structure prediction of biomolecular interactions with AlphaFold 3

Josh Abramson, Jonas Adler, Jack Dunger, Richard Evans and 44 more · 2024

Abstract The introduction of AlphaFold 21 has spurred a revolution in modelling the structure of proteins and their interactions, enabling a huge range of applications in protein modelling and design2–6. Here we describe our AlphaFold 3 model with a substantially updated diffusion-based architecture that is capable of predicting the joint structure of complexes including proteins, nucleic acids, small molecules, ions and modified residues. The new AlphaFold model demonstrates substantially improved accuracy over many previous specialized tools: far greater accuracy for protein–ligand interacti…

Rebecca L. Siegel, Angela N. Giaquinto, Ahmedin Jemal · 2024

Each year, the American Cancer Society estimates the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States and compiles the most recent data on population-based cancer occurrence and outcomes using incidence data collected by central cancer registries (through 2020) and mortality data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics (through 2021). In 2024, 2,001,140 new cancer cases and 611,720 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States. Cancer mortality continued to decline through 2021, averting over 4 million deaths since 1991 because of reductions in smoking, ea…

How this list is built, and what it is not

Papers are ranked by the citation counts OpenAlex records, filtered to open-access journal articles from 2023 onward so that everything here is actually readable without a subscription. That filter has consequences worth knowing: highly cited work behind a paywall is excluded, and citation counts accumulate over time, so a 2023 paper will almost always outrank an equally important one from this year.

Read it as a map of what a field is currently building on, not as a ranking of quality or a current-awareness feed. Citation counts measure attention, and attention and rigour are not the same thing.
